January 2021 Update - End of week 17
This month on site utility diversions have started.
At the start of the month the semi-permanent barriers were installed on site. This closed one of the northbound lanes of the A339 to allow a safe working space for staff on site.
Kerbing works have continued on site throughout the month to form the new road alignment. Once completed this will be the new boundary on the northbound side, allowing room for the additional lane that will be in place on this section. Due to the new alignment of the road, much of the existing infrastructure such as street lights are also going to have to be moved. New ducting for the street lights is also being laid to facilitate the electrical supply, as was the case for the construction of the link road.
Due to the extent of the new road construction, utility companies have been assisting in moving their infrastructure. The existing position of the utilities in the old road verge needed to be moved to a safe location in the new road formation. The first of which has been completed this January by Thames Water. This involved digging a new trench in the required location, allowing to Thames Water to lay new infrastructure. Once this has been completed the trench is backfilled and the next utility provider can attend.
This can be a painstaking process at times, due to the close proximity of multiple different live services.
Activities on site next week:
- SKY network infrastructure diversion.
- Continuing to kerb the new A339 alignment.
