housing strategy 2020-2036 approved

Issued on: 14 April 2021.

The Housing Strategy sets out West Berkshire Council's strategic housing priorities and the range of actions that the Council intends to take in partnership with relevant partners and stakeholders. The strategy details how we intend to deliver the Council's vision through two priorities:

  • Priority 1 - Enable every resident to have access to a home that meets their needs
  • Priority 2 - Reduce homelessness

Councillor Hilary Cole, Executive Member for Housing at West Berkshire Council, said:

"Following the consultation of the draft Housing Strategy towards the latter part of 2020, residents and stakeholders were invited to have their say.  We have listened to everyone's views and support for the delivery of the Housing Strategy and this has shaped the approved strategy and meets the needs of our residents.

"The two main priorities will be delivered through a robust Housing Strategy Delivery Plan which details a number of actions we will undertake. This includes links to our other Council strategies such as, the Environment Strategy - for greener homes, The Local Plan - to provide opportunities for affordable housing, and our draft joint Health and Wellbeing Strategy - to deliver suitable housing to help residents who are impacted by poor housing.

"The Housing Strategy also details our plans to provide a positive impact for an ageing population, plus opportunities for increasing provision of affordable housing for residents with disabilities and young people. The strategy also identifies our aims for reducing homelessness and for the provision of specialist accommodation.

"We have many achievements to be proud of under the last Housing Strategy period and going forward we will continue to influence and intervene within the local housing market for the benefit of West Berkshire residents."
