The Clubhouse at Faraday Road

We are shocked and saddened that a fire has destroyed the old football ground clubhouse at Faraday Road over the weekend, despite the Council having taken all reasonable steps to ensure that the site was kept secure.

We would like to thank the Police and Fire and Rescue Services for their swift assistance and we are continuing to work with them to ensure that the site is safe.  We are also working with them to determine how the fire was started, but we suspect it to have been arson.

Council staff were on site on Saturday 14 August from 9:45am through to 6:00pm dealing with a number of actions including:

  • arranging for cars parked adjacent to the fire damaged building to be removed;
  • arranging for power to be cut off at the electrical substation;
  • waiting for the final Fire & Rescue confirmation that the fire was wholly out (hot spots were checked and the site was declared clear at 3pm);
  • generally making the site safe and arranging additional security fencing;
  • dealing with a water leak (not an emergency and which will be dealt with in the next 24 hours).

We are seeking expert advice from both the Health and Safety Executive and Building Control to ensure the site is dealt with appropriately.  Scottish and Southern Electricity have returned this morning to remove the electricity meter.

Other site visits have taken place to ensure that remaining sections of the car park can remain open for the public to use safely.

The public are however asked not to visit the site given our concerns for public safety.

Despite this incident, and even if the remaining fire-damaged structure has to be demolished on safety grounds, in order to ensure that there is due process the Council intends to continue with the application for formal planning permission to demolish the buildings, and to re-open the grass pitch for general community recreational sport.
