West Berkshire reaches donation milestone
West Berkshire Council has reached its target for community goods donations in support of families affected by the Afghanistan conflict who are staying in temporary hotel accommodation in the district.
Issued on: 14 September 2021
Following the arrival of the families at two local hotels on 3rd September, West Berkshire Council has been working with local partners to welcome them and to assess their needs. A call for donations was made on 8th September with requests for specific essential items to help them during their stay in the district and after just four days, all of the items requested have been gifted by local residents and businesses.
The Good Exchange page, which may be used for those who wish to make financial donations, remains live and has already raised almost £10,000 at the time of going to print, which includes match funding up to a value of £25,000 by Greenham Trust.
Commenting on this milestone, Councillor Lynne Doherty, Leader of West Berkshire Council, said:
"We have been overwhelmed by the generosity shown already by residents and businesses and I would like thank everyone who has donated clothing or other essential items to help us to welcome our guests. To have received all that we need so quickly is a real credit to the local community.
"We owe a huge debt to those who have served alongside British Forces at great personal risk and it's great to see that local people have been so keen to help.
"The Good Exchange fundraising link remains active for those who wish to make a financial contribution, which we hope will help them to build their lives in their new homes across the UK."
