A final consultation on a proposal to develop a specialist education centre for young people with complex social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs is now live.

An earlier consultation, which took place at the end of 2020, asked for your views on our proposal to develop a specialist resourced provision for up to 42 secondary aged learners (aged 11 to 18 years) with SEMH needs, who may also have a diagnosis of autism.

The response was very positive, with 98% (84 out of 86) of respondents in favour of the proposals. Several respondents stated that this is badly needed provision, which they very much welcomed.

Since then, further consultation has taken place to confirm the old Theale Primary School as the site for this provision and there has been a webinar to engage face to face with local people to capture their views.

Dominic Boeck, West Berkshire's Executive Member for Education, Children and Young People said, "This is a very exciting project and we are now in the final stages. Project planning is underway to establish the feasibility of Theale Primary School site as the location for this important provision.

"As the provision will be managed by The Castle School, it is necessary to increase the size of The Castle School by 42 places and to formally change to the type of SEN provision the school is designated to provide to accommodate the needs of children and young people with a primary need of SEMH.

"This final consultation aims to capture the views of local residents and stakeholders towards both of these changes.  We then hope to be in a position to start work to provide an excellent space for these young people to grow both emotionally and educationally."
