Each year, West Berkshire Council's  Learner Achievement Awards (LAA) celebrate remarkable individuals whose commitment to learning defies expectations and inspires others. If you know someone whose journey reflects courage, growth or determination, nominate them so we can honour their achievements and share their story. This year's ceremony will take place on Friday, 7 November, at Shaw House, Newbury. It will feature a keynote from Anthony Bennett, known as the Miracle Man. After surviving three life-threatening infections, Anthony became a leading motivational speaker. His story of resilience and optimism reflects the spirit of the awards. It promises to be a highlight of the evening.

Councillor Heather Codling, West Berkshire's Executive Member for Children and Family Services, says:

"This annual celebration honours the transformative power of adult learning and the individuals who've embraced education to overcome challenges, build new futures and inspire those around them. We're looking for nominations that show how learning has helped people turn obstacles into opportunities."

Last year's winners showed how life-changing learning can be:

  • Nadiia Torpoka, winner of the Outstanding Achievement Award, fled war-torn Ukraine in 2022. After studying at The Vici Language Academy, she now works in UK Hydro Engineering—a remarkable transformation.
  • Tom Allport, Skills for Life Award winner, changed careers in his late 30s through a Level 3 Business Administration apprenticeship. Despite serious health challenges and struggling with Maths Level 2, he persevered, achieved a distinction, and is now thriving professionally.
  • Charlotte Davies, Return to Learning Award winner, began her journey as a new mum in a rural community. Starting at the Central Family Hub in Thatcham, she built confidence through courses and now volunteers there, with plans to pursue a Level 3 childcare qualification.
