Extension of Public Spaces Protection Order in Thatcham Town Centre confirmed

West Berkshire Council has agreed to extend the Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) in Thatcham town centre for another three years, after 97% of respondents backed the proposal during consultation.

The PSPO, introduced initially to tackle persistent anti-social behaviour in the town centre, has proven to be an effective tool in supporting Thames Valley Police and improving the safety and wellbeing of residents, visitors, and businesses.

Cllr Tom McCann, Executive Portfolio Member for Public Safety and Community Engagement, said:

"Since its implementation, the PSPO has been an effective preventative tool in tackling anti-social behaviour.  The extension ensures that we continue to protect our community and maintain a welcoming environment for all who live, work and visit Thatcham town centre."

The PSPO extension comes into effect from today (Tuesday, 11 November) and will remain in effect until November 2028. The PSPO includes powers for authorised officers to direct individuals causing nuisance, harassment, alarm or distress to leave the restricted area and not return for up to 24 hours.  Those who fail to comply may face a Fixed Penalty Notice of up to £100, or prosecution with fines up to £1,000.

The decision follows a public consultation held between 18 August and 29 September 2025, during which residents and stakeholders were asked for their views on the future of the PSPO.

West Berkshire Council and Thames Valley Police will continue to monitor the PSPO to ensure the PSPO continues to meet the needs of the community.
