Historic win highlights drive for inclusive cycling for young riders of all abilities
Newbury Velo has been named Children and Young People Club of the Year at the 2025 British Cycling Awards - a prestigious national accolade celebrating the club's leadership in making cycling accessible for all. As a British Cycling Limitless Focus Club, Newbury Velo has pioneered inclusive cycling opportunities for young people of every ability.
The club was also crowned Overall Club of the Year, officially recognised as the best cycling club in Britain for 2025. This historic win reflects the dedication, creativity, and community spirit that define Newbury Velo's approach to inclusive sport.
As a British Cycling Limitless Focus Club, Newbury Velo has pioneered inclusive cycling opportunities for young people of every ability.
Working in partnership with West Berkshire Council, the club has delivered innovative programmes such as tandem riding for visually impaired young people from Berkshire Vision and specialist cycle coaching for Post-16 students at Newbury College.
They also run popular mountain bike sessions with a set of ramps and other fun obstacles donated by West Berkshire Council.
These initiatives reflect a shared commitment to breaking down barriers and inspiring the next generation of cyclists.
Founded in 2019, Newbury Velo has grown into a vibrant community offering everything from social rides through West Berkshire's stunning countryside to competitive racing, velodrome experiences, and skills development. The club's dedicated volunteers and coaches play a vital role in building confidence, resilience, and life skills through cycling.
Simon Bowden, Chair of Newbury Velo said:
"Newbury Velo is proud to work in Partnership with West Berkshire Council to deliver inclusive, community led cycling opportunities in the borough. Our collaborations with Berkshire Vision, West Berkshire Spokes and Newbury Road Club are also hugely important to providing access to cycling for anybody who wants to pedal a bike, whether that be a child learning to ride a bike, or an adult getting back in the saddle. We look forward to working together to make Newbury the cycling capital of the region."
Councillor Martin Coulson, Cycling Champion for West Berkshire Council, Chair of the Cycling Forum and a member of Velo said:
"Newbury Velo has built a strong partnership with both West Berkshire Council and Berkshire Vision, which has enabled us to provide tandem riding sessions for children with visual impairments and disabilities.
The children absolutely love riding, and the tandem pilots (of whom I am one) find it a truly uplifting experience. As a result of this partnership and the fantastic children's coaching programme we offer, it's amazing that Newbury Velo has won the Children and Young People Club of the Year award from British Cycling and been crowned overall club of the year. They are both huge honours for the club and for our partners."
