Bin store rubbish and recycling
If you live in a flat or communal property, you'll have a bin store.
You will be allocated different green bins in your bin store to use for recycling. There will be a purple bin for food waste only.
There will also be a black bin for rubbish that cannot be recycled. Please make sure you reduce, reuse, repair and recycle as much as you can, before using the rubbish bin.
What goes in each bin
The recycling bins are labelled to show which material can be put into them.
We've listed what can and cannot go in each bin below. You can also
The red top bin is for plastic pots, tubs, trays, plastic bottles, aerosols and cans.
This includes:
- aerosols
- drink cans
- food tins
- metal sweet tins
- plastic bottles (please unscrew lids)
- plastic pots, tubs and trays
Please make sure containers are washed out before placing in the recycling bin.
Do not put the following in the red top bin:
- black plastic
- polystyrene
- aerosol cans with an orange and black cross
- aluminium foil trays
- plastic bags and film
The brown top bin is for glass bottles and jars.
Please rinse jars to remove food residue. Lids can be left on.
Do not put the following in the brown top bin:
- window and greenhouse glass
- broken glass
- pyrex and drinking glasses
- light bulbs
The blue top bin is for paper and cardboard (please remove polystyrene).
This includes:
- egg boxes
- magazines and newspapers
- envelopes
- catalogues
- cardboard tubes
- junk mail
- cardboard packaging (cardboard must be flattened and no bigger than 85cm x 45cm)
Do not put the following in the blue top bin:
- padded envelopes
- tissues
- tetra paks or juice cartons
- wallpaper
- shredded paper
The purple bin is for food waste.
This includes:
- meat, fish and bones
- bread and pastries
- plate scrapings
- fruit and vegetables (raw and cooked)
- tea bags and coffee grounds
- cheese and eggs
- rice, pasta and beans
Please only use compostable liners for your food waste.
Do not put the following in the purple bin:
- general waste
- large red meat bones
- Oil, liquids and fats
- animal bedding and waste
- coal and ash
- packaging
To make sure you get a great service:
- please use empty bins at the back of the bin store first
- only put rubbish that can't be collected by the recycling scheme in the black rubbish bins
- never put food waste in your black bin (other than large meat bones) to avoid smells and unwanted pests
- keep your bin store tidy - make sure all recycling and rubbish is placed inside the bins; no recycling or rubbish should be left on the floor or on top of the bins
- don't block access to the bin store - if access is blocked by cars or other vehicles we may not be able to collect your rubbish
- don't leave furniture or large items of rubbish in your bin store - large household furniture can be taken to Newtown Road Recycling Centre or collected by our bulky waste collection
