Citizenship Ceremonies

After you have successfully applied to become a British Citizen, if you are 18 years or over, you need to arrange a citizen ceremony with your local authority. Details will be provided in the letter you receive from the Home Office.
 

How do I book a ceremony?

When you receive your invitation letter from the Home Office please telephone us to book your ceremony. You should have the invitation letter with you when you phone.

Group ceremonies are held once a month on a Tuesday afternoon at 2pm.

You may book a private ceremony with us, at a time more convenient for you within our office open hours. Please see our price list page.

Once a booking has been made, you will then be sent a letter by email confirming the date of your ceremony, where it will be held and what you need to bring with you.
 

Guests

For a group ceremony you may bring up to two guests with you. It may be possible to bring more guests with you, but please ring us to confirm whether this is possible.

For a private ceremony you may bring up to 46 guests.
 

What happens at the ceremony?

Tea and coffee will be offered to you on arrival whilst the new citizens are booked in. The Chairman or Vice-Chairman of West Berkshire Council will attend the ceremony, greet you when you arrive and give a speech during the ceremony. The Lord Lieutenant/a Deputy Lieutenant may also be in attendance.

During the ceremony you will either swear an oath or affirm allegiance to the sovereign and make a pledge of loyalty. You will be given cards to use as a guide, but will be asked to repeat both after the registrar conducting the ceremony.

You will be presented with your Certificate of Naturalisation by one of the dignitaries. Your guests are welcome to take photographs of you being presented with your certificate and of you signing our commemorative register.

Finally everyone will be asked to stand whilst the National Anthem is played.
