Commercial waste

Businesses have a duty of care to dispose of rubbish responsibly.

Business owners have a duty of care to make sure the waste they generate is disposed of properly. You can find out more about disposing of business or commercial waste on GOV.UK.

Business owners should check that any company or contractor they employ to dispose of their waste is licensed to do so. The Environment Agency Waste Register lists licensed waste disposal companies.

We do not provide rubbish or recycling collection services for commercial waste. However, if required, we can ask our contractor Veolia to provide a quote for a commercial collection service.

Simpler recycling compliance

By 31 March 2025, all businesses with more than 10 full-time equivalent employees must recycle the following materials:

  • paper
  • cardboard
  • plastic bottles, pots, tubs and trays
  • glass
  • metal tins, cans, aerosols, lids, food trays and foil
  • food waste

We would advise businesses to discuss arrangements with their current waste collection provider to make sure they are compliant by the deadline.

Fly tipping

If rubbish is found fly tipped and traced back to a business, the business will be held responsible, and could be prosecuted.
