View roadworks and road closures
The map below shows all current and planned roadworks in West Berkshire. Roadworks may be undertaken by the council's contractors, or by external organisations such as utility companies, who need to access pipes or cables buried in the road.
The council has a duty to co-ordinate all roadworks on our network. We make sure that disruption is kept to a minimum while providing a safe environment for those doing the work.
You can view what each icon represents by clicking the three lines to the left of the 'search' box. To view future scheduled work, adjust the drop down menu in the top right of the map to the time period you would like to view.
You can also sign up for email alerts from one.network by clicking the envelope icon underneath the search bar (this will take you to the Causeway one.network website).
You can report a problem with roadworks online, including temporary traffic light issues or signs left in the road.
Road closures
It is sometimes necessary for us to temporarily close a section of road for roadworks. This includes roadworks undertaken by us, for example, resurfacing, and roadworks undertaken by utility companies. Whilst road closures are inconvenient, they are required to make sure that works can take place efficiently and safely.
Planned closures
When a road needs to be closed, advance notice signs will be placed on site several days before the work is due to start. Where possible, we send out letters before any work we will be carrying out. We also ask utility companies to do the same. However, sometimes we need to change the schedule at short notice and are unable to do this in time.
If we are undertaking resurfacing work, we always consider night working as an option, but it is often not feasible due to environmental restrictions related to noise, particularly in residential areas.
Emergency closures
Unfortunately, we sometimes need to close a road immediately and without notice due to an emergency situation. For example, fallen trees, burst water mains and serious road traffic accidents.
In these circumstances, it usually isn't possible to put up diversion signs, and it can take time for us to update the roadworks map. We do try to put out as much information as we can on the council's social media channels.
Accessing your property
Vehicle access on resurfaced roads
If we are undertaking resurfacing work, properties immediately affected by the road closure will receive a letter with further details.
The 'work area' is the section of the road where our operatives will be working. The road closure area often extends beyond this to manage through traffic and divert it on to an alternative route. On the reverse of the letter, you will find a map which shows the work area.
If the road is being resurfaced, we cannot guarantee immediate access to properties in the work area, as the work involves hot asphalt and large equipment.
Access will still be maintained where possible. However, due to the nature of the works at times vehicle access will be restricted or delayed. If you normally drive into or out of the work area continually throughout the day when the closure is in place, we ask you to please make alternative arrangements.
Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.
Vehicle access if you have a disability
If you have a disability and need vehicle access to your property, please call us on 01635 519080 with details of your requirements. If work is already underway, let our site operatives know your circumstances and they will assist.
Access for carer / district nurse / midwife
Please call us on 01635 519080 with details of your requirements. If work is already underway, let our site operatives know your circumstances and they will assist. Also let your carer / district nurse / midwife know about the road closure as they may need to allow extra time for the visit in case of delays.
Access for business staff / customers / deliveries
If your business is inside the work area, unfortunately we cannot guarantee immediate access during our work hours. We would ask you to make alternative arrangements. Businesses should encourage staff and customers to park nearby and use pedestrian access.
If your business is in the road closure area but outside of the work limits, speak to the site operatives who will assist with essential access and deliveries.
Home deliveries
Delivery drivers are often happy to park nearby and use pedestrian access to make their delivery. To avoid disruption, consider rearranging any deliveries for after the work is finished, or outside the hours of the closure.
Parking
If you usually park on the road within the work area, you will need to find alternative parking nearby during the hours of the road closure. Off-road parking will not be affected however we cannot guarantee immediate access in or out during our work hours.
We apologise for the inconvenience this might cause, but it is unfortunately impossible to avoid at times.
Bin collections
We'll work to make sure make sure your collections will go ahead on your usual collection day, but please put your bins and recycling boxes out by 6am. This is to allow for the collection times to be changed slightly to take the roadworks into account.
If the road is being resurfaced, your refuse collector will have been advised of the closure in advance and should have made alternative collection arrangements. Please contact our Waste Services team for more details.
Bus routes and stops
We notify bus companies before any planned road closures. They will arrange alternative routes. Please contact your bus operator for more details.
