Health and Wellbeing in Schools Programme
Supporting the delivery of the West Berkshire Health and Wellbeing Strategy
This programme is delivered by the Health and Wellbeing in Schools Team, which is funded by Public Health and Wellbeing.
Working in partnership with the School Improvement Team and Education Service, the Health and Wellbeing in Schools coordinator acts as the lead professional, supporting schools to embed a holistic approach to Health and Wellbeing.
The core programme
The team delivers the core programme, which includes:
Year 3 Living Well Food and You Workshop and Be Active, Sleep and Wellbeing Workshop
Healthy Lifestyles workshops for year 3 students in primary schools around West Berkshire. All schools are eligible for the Food and You workshop with the additional workshop available to schools selected based on the data we receive from the National Child Measurement Programme.
These workshops are delivered by us, using resources from NHS Better Health's 'Healthier Families', and they seek to inspire children and their families about the benefits of good nutrition, exercise and the positive impact these activities can have on our lives. The workshops are fun and practical, with the children problem solving and working together to learn key information about nutrition, food labels, added sugar and much much more.
The programme also includes:
- Primary and Secondary Subject Network coordination for Relationships, RSE (Relationships and Sex Education), and Health (including PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic education)
- RSE and PSHE subject reviews
- Delivery and coordination of the West Berkshire Youth Survey (New for 2023)
- Active Travel schools support
- 5 Ways to Wellbeing Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3 workshop resources
- PSHE4you video resources for schools
- The Health and Wellbeing in Schools hub digital newsletter
The Health and Wellbeing in Schools award
offers a practical, 'plan, do, review' approach to improving health and wellbeing in children, young people and staff.
The award recognises, celebrates and builds on the work already happening in school to support children, young people and the wider school community's health and wellbeing.
Young Health Champion qualification for young people
The Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH) provides a Young Health Champion (YHC) qualification for young people to enable them to learn new practical skills and knowledge for promoting health and wellbeing to peers, friends, family and their wider communities.
Schools can arrange for the delivery of the RSPH Level 2 qualification by an experienced RSPH trained qualified trainer, who is also a Mental Health First Aider.
- The qualification is delivered in your school over two/three days for up to 12 learners
- The student's portfolios are fully assessed and externally verified
- Once qualified the students become part the West Berkshire Young Health Champion network and the national Youth Health Movement (this includes places at the annual Young Health Champion Conference at Shaw House)
