The funding will be considered at the Council's Executive meeting on Thursday, 25 September.

This proposal builds on the successful return of football to the site in 2023 and reflects a key commitment made by the Liberal Democrat administration. It also aligns with the aims of the emerging Playing Pitch Strategy, which seeks to improve access to high-quality sports facilities across the district.

If approved, the new 3G pitch, with the highest standards of environmental protection, would offer significant benefits to the local community. The facility would provide year-round access, allowing for use in all weather conditions, reducing cancellations and ensuring consistent availability for training, matches, and community events. With good management, a 3G pitch can be used for up to 60 hours per week, compared to just six hours for a traditional grass pitch.

The increased capacity would support greater participation in sport and physical activity among local teams, schools, and community groups. It would also promote physical fitness, mental wellbeing, and social interaction across all age groups. The pitch would serve as a reliable venue for grassroots football clubs, school sports programmes, and youth development initiatives.

Importantly, the proposal includes plans to ensure the facility is accessible to a wide range of users, including underrepresented groups, helping to reduce barriers to participation in sport. Hosting local leagues, tournaments, and events would also help encourage stronger community cohesion.

Councillor Nigel Foot, Executive member for Culture, Leisure, Sport and Countryside, said:

"This proposal marks a significant step forward for sport and community life in Newbury. Subject to approval, the new 3G pitch at Faraday Road would be a vital resource for clubs, schools and residents. We're proud to bring forward a plan that supports health, inclusion, and community spirit."
